Cosmetic Injections - What You Need To Know

Cosmetic Injections are a great way of treating wrinkles, fine lines, plump up your lips, or replace lost facial volume and gauntness.

Cosmetic Injections should only be performed by registered medical providers. We have written a blog about this and some of the considerations you should think about before selecting a cosmetic injector. All cosmetic injections are performed by Dr Saliba at Le Sands Clinic.  Before your treatment, you will initially see Dr Saliba and in this consult, Dr Saliba will get to know you, and what you are looking to achieve. The consultation will also equip you with the information that you need in order to make an informed decision as to whether cosmetic injections are the right course of action for you. We have a number of different injectable options for you.

What Are Lip Filler Injections?

Lip filler injections are a type of cosmetic procedure in which a gel-like substance is injected into the lips to enhance their size, shape, and overall appearance.

Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occuring compound that helps the skin retain moisture and create volume, is the most popular filler material used for lip augmentation. Collagen and fat are two other fillers that can be employed.

Lip fillers are intended to give patients bigger, plumper lips that look natural and enhance their facial characteristics.

The operation can be done as an outpatient procedure and is normally carried out by a certified medical expert. At Le Sands Clinic we offer lip filler injections every Saturday and every second Thursday.

What Are Lip Fillers Made Of?

There are several types of lip fillers, each with its own unique characteristics, pros, and cons. The most commonly used fillers for lip augmentation are:

  1. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body that helps to retain moisture and add volume to the skin. It is the most commonly used filler material for lip augmentation because it is safe, effective, and produces natural-looking results.

  2. Collagen Fillers: Collagen is a protein that is found in the body and helps to maintain the skin’s elasticity and strength. Collagen fillers are made from bovine or human collagen and can be used to enhance the lips. However, they are less commonly used today due to the availability of newer, more advanced fillers.

  3. Fat Fillers: Fat fillers involve taking fat from another part of the body and injecting it into the lips to add volume. This type of filler is less commonly used because it is more invasive and requires a surgical procedure.

  4. Synthetic Fillers: Synthetic fillers are made from man-made substances that are not naturally found in the body. They are less commonly used in lip augmentation because they can have a higher risk of side effects and may not produce natural-looking results. Some examples of synthetic fillers include silicone and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA).

What Are The Benefits of Lip Fillers?

Lip filler injections can offer several benefits, including:

  1. Increased volume: Lip fillers can add volume to the lips, making them look fuller and plumper. This can enhance the appearance of thin or flat lips.

  2. Improved symmetry: Lip fillers can also improve the symmetry of the lips, making them look more balanced and proportionate.

  3. Enhanced lip shape: Lip fillers can be used to enhance the shape of the lips, such as defining the Cupid’s bow or creating a more pronounced vermillion border.

  4. Reduced fine lines and wrinkles: Some lip fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.

  5. Quick and convenient: Lip filler injections are a quick and convenient way to enhance the lips, as the procedure usually only takes a few minutes to complete.

  6. Minimal downtime: After the procedure, patients can usually return to their normal activities immediately, as there is typically minimal downtime associated with lip fillers.

  7. Customizable results: Lip filler injections can be customized to meet the individual’s specific goals and preferences, as the amount and placement of the filler can be tailored to achieve the desired results.

Overall, lip filler injections can be a safe and effective way to enhance the appearance of the lips and achieve a more youthful, rejuvenated look.

How Are Lip Fillers Injected?

  1. Consultation: The first step is to schedule a consultation with our team at Le Sands Clinic. During your consultation we will assess your lips, discuss their goals and expectations, and determine if you are a good candidate for lip fillers, or if another treatment is more suitable.

  2. Preparation: Before the injection, we clean the treatment area and may apply a numbing cream or local anesthesia to minimize any discomfort during the procedure.

  3. Injection: Dr Saliba will then use a fine needle to inject the filler into specific areas of the lips to achieve the desired result. The injection process usually takes less than an hour to complete.

  4. Aftercare: After the injection, you may experience some swelling, redness, or bruising in the treatment area. We’ll talk you through the aftercare instructions, such as applying ice to the area to reduce swelling or avoiding certain activities for a period of time. You may also need to schedule a follow-up appointment to assess the results.

It is important to choose a qualified, experienced medical professional to perform the procedure, such as Dr Saliba. To begin discussing your aesthetic goals, book a consultation today.

How Can I Maximise My Recovery?

Recovering from lip fillers typically involves taking care of the treatment area and following any aftercare instructions provided by the medical professional who performed the procedure. Here are some general tips on how to recover from lip fillers:

  1. Apply ice: Applying ice to the treatment area can help reduce swelling and bruising. You can apply a cold compress or ice pack to the lips for 10-15 minutes at a time, several times a day for the first 24-48 hours after the injection.

  2. Avoid certain activities: Avoid strenuous exercise, exposure to heat or sun, and drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours after the injection. This can help reduce the risk of swelling and bruising.

  3. Avoid touching or massaging the lips: For at least 24 hours after the injection, avoid touching or massaging the lips. This can cause the filler to shift or migrate to other areas of the lips, which can affect the results.

  4. Take pain medication, if necessary: Over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen, can help alleviate any discomfort or pain after the injection. Follow the instructions on the package and consult with your medical professional if you have any questions.

  5. Book a follow up appointment: It is important to schedule a follow-up appointment to assess the results and address any concerns.

It is important to carefully follow all aftercare instructions provided to ensure the best possible results and minimize the risk of complications.

How Soon Will I See Results?

Even though you might start to notice the effects of your lip filler injection right away, the complete effects might not become apparent for a few days to a week. It’s crucial to be patient and wait for the swelling to go down because the initial bruising and swelling can make the lips appear bigger than they actually are.

It is important to remember that lip fillers are not permanent and the results will eventually fade over time. If you wish to maintain the results, you may need to schedule touch-up treatments or additional injections. Be sure to discuss your goals and expectations with us during your consultation to determine the best treatment plan for you.

How Long Do Results Last?

The type of filler used and the person’s metabolism can affect how long lip fillers last. But the majority of lip fillers only last six months to a year. Hyaluronic acid-based lip fillers can sometimes last up to 12 to 18 months. After that, the lips will gradually regain their normal size and form as the filler progressively degrades and is absorbed by the body.

The quantity of filler used, the manner in which it was injected, and the patient’s metabolism are all variables that might determine how long lip fillers last. The filler may be broken down more quickly in those with faster metabolisms or those who are more physically active.

To maintain the results of lip fillers, patients may need to schedule touch-up treatments or additional injections.

What Are The Side Effects of Lip Fillers?

Like any cosmetic procedure, lip fillers can cause side effects. Some of the common side effects of lip fillers include:

  1. Swelling: Swelling is a common side effect of lip fillers and can last for a few days to a week after the injection. The amount of swelling can vary depending on the individual and the type of filler used.

  2. Bruising: Bruising can also occur after lip fillers and can take a few days to a week to heal. The risk of bruising can be minimized by avoiding certain medications or supplements that can increase the risk of bleeding.

  3. Redness: The injection site may appear red or inflamed for a few days after the procedure. This is usually temporary and will resolve on its own.

  4. Lumps or bumps: In some cases, the filler may form small lumps or bumps in the treatment area. These can usually be massaged or smoothed out by the provider, but in rare cases, they may need to be dissolved.

  5. Allergic reactions: Allergic reactions to fillers are rare but can occur. Symptoms may include itching, redness, or swelling at the injection site. If you experience any symptoms of an allergic reaction, contact your medical professional right away.

  6. Infection: In rare cases, lip fillers can cause an infection. Symptoms may include pain, redness, swelling, or fever. If you experience any symptoms of an infection, contact your medical professional right away.
